There’s nothing more exciting than packing for a trip! I’m headed to Texas this weekend to visit Taylor, and see our new home! I’m so excited. Taylor bought a house, and it closes this weekend. We’re going to look at the house because I haven’t seen it yet, and pick out furniture and everything. Honestly couldn’t think of a more exciting vacation. I’m going to try to get photos and maybe Insta story the house while I’m there! So follow me on Instagram to see that!
More on why Taylor is in Texas and our big move in this blog post if you’re interested.
Anyways, because of all the back and forth between here and Texas the last few months (this will be my third trip since December), and all of my last minute trips to my dad’s beach condo, I’ve become the master at making a last minute packing checklist.
Here are all of my tips for how I pack last minute for trips!
My Travel Makeup Bag
The biggest thing that’s made a difference in my packing is keeping a travel makeup bag and a travel toiletries bag made up at all times. Whenever I want to try a new product, I buy the travel size first. If I love it, I buy the full size and keep the travel size bottle. I refill these travel sized face washes, shampoos, and conditioners, and keep them in my travel bag. This way I’m not constantly moving products from one bag to another when I need to travel.
Another thing I always do is keep a second set of all of my makeup in a travel bag. I buy mostly drugstore products to keep in this bag. This way if anything gets broken or lost while traveling, I’m not losing an expensive product. Check out this blog post for all of my favorite drugstore products!
Wear your Biggest Items on the Plane
My mom taught me this one! Most of the time when I’m flying last minute I’m not checking a bag. If I’m bringing big items like coats and boots, I always wear them onto the plane. This frees up tons of room in my carry on for everything else. This trip I’m bringing my Hunter boots because it’s supposed to rain, and if I can’t get them to fit into my carry on I’ll wear them on the flight. I’m secretly hoping they do fit in the carry on though, so that I can wear my new super cute $13 Birkenstock dupes on the flight that I was chatting about in my stories!
Pick your 3 Favorite Bags
I always bring three bags on small trips. My backpack, my suitcase, and a small purse. No more than that! There’s just not enough room in my suitcase for purse changes with every outfit. My backpack carries everything I’ll need during the flight (laptop, wallet, etc), my small purse is small enough that I can put it in my suitcase until needed during the trip, and I have the cutest hard shell suitcase to use as my carry on.
Plan your Outfits Ahead of Time
I know this is a last minute trip, but even when I’m packing on a time crunch I always lay my clothes out as I plan in the outfits I plan on wearing them in. That way I’m not packing clothes that won’t get worn. In a carry on we just don’t have room for that.
Be Strategic about your Bottoms
Okay, that sounds weird, but hear me out… I only pack one type of each bottom. So after you plan your outfits, if you want to wear dark jeans with multiple outfits only pack one pair and wear them multiple times. Washing your jeans after every wear is bad for them anyways. I promise it’s not gross. So like for this trip I have one skirt, one dark jean, and one white jean (okay fine.. maybe my rainbow tie-dye overalls made the cut too lol!).
Roll your Clothes
Last and probably most important, roll your clothes! I cannot stress this one enough. The best way to get the most out of your carry on space is by rolling everything up tightly. This keeps it all from wrinkling too.
