Hey, y’all! I’m so excited about today’s post because for a really long time I struggled with being able to afford the clothes I love. I have a very distinct style, and when I find brands that fit that style I am loyal to them to a fault. If you’ve ever seen my outfits on Instagram, you know I love a good dress, and Lilly Pulitzer is the bulk of my dress collection. I love bright colors and fun prints, and Lilly is without a doubt my favorite brand.
But with loving clothes comes the hardship of paying for said clothes. For a long time, I charged clothes to my card (more on that story here) but now, I pay for everything cash. At this point in my life, I can’t afford to buy beautiful expensive pieces full price all the time, so I’ve gotten creative.
Here are my top 4 tips for buying Lilly Pulitzer and other expensive pieces on a budget:
Buy During End of Season Sales
As much as I want to buy things right when they are released, I always wait for the sales to buy most of my Lilly. Lilly Pulitzer has two sales per year. One in August and one in January that are both online and in store. The August one has the best selection from recent seasons, and the January one is usually all the things from the past year that wasn’t included in the August sale. Everything is usually 50-75% off the retail value of the item. It’s the best deal you can get on such expensive pieces! I save all year round to buy at these sales, and if I don’t get a piece during the sale that year that I wanted I move on to the next two steps.
Lilly Pulitzer Facebook Groups
There are TONS of Lilly Facebook groups for buying, selling, and even styling Lilly! I only buy and sell in one group called Lilly Pulitzer: Dressed to Impress because it’s the easiest for me to keep up with. I use to be in a ton of groups but a lot of them have drama, so I stick to the one that has the least drama and the best pieces!
Poshmark, Mercari, eBay
These three websites are my go-to for buying second hand Lilly. I always find really good deals on there that are a huge discount from regular prices. A lot of stuff is even new with tags! Just make sure you check the descriptions and photos really well before you purchase on these sites. I’ve gotten excited about a deal in the past and ended up with items that were put in the dryer when they weren’t supposed to or had stains.
Another great thing about these sites is you can sell your clothing as well! I love funding new clothes with money I’ve made off old clothes. Lilly resells really easily, so any pieces I don’t wear anymore I sell. While I was getting out of debt, I also used this tactic to pay down my credit cards! It worked really well.
Don’t Get Carried Away With The Hype
Lilly Pulitzer is a brand with great marketing. They have gotten me up at 5 am to buy water bottles for Pete’s sake, but I’ve learned that staying level headed and not buying things just because of the hype is the best way to keep yourself on budget. A friend of mine has always had the philosophy that if what you wanted sold out before you could get it, it wasn’t meant to be! This is the biggest thing to remember during sales and other exciting releases; give yourself a budget and stick to it. Don’t allow the hype to convince you to spend more, or charge a card, to pay for clothes. It’s not worth it!
